Les Japonais


In the nineteenth century, a great fascination for Japanese art and design influenced Western artists such as Edgar Degas, Alfred Stevens or James McNeill Whistler. Japonisme also influenced the performing arts such as Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado or Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly. Eugenie Malanotti De Caldes, the grandmother of De Caldes designer Mario Gagliardi, collected Japanese Faience and planted Japanese Cherry trees in the garden of her villa. This collection, designed by Mario Gagliardi, pays hommage to this time, its colors and aethetics.
