Bau.Haus No. 1 is a hommage to Studio Alchimia, the design group founded by Alessandro Guerriero and Bruno Gregori in Milan. Designer Mario Gagliardi created this rug in reverence to his teacher Alessandro Mendini, who composed manifestos and created designs for the group. Alchimia's first furniture collection was Bau.Haus Uno, made in 1979 by hand.
For this rug, Mario Gagliardi used the design methodology Alchimia developed for its first collection. He took an image of an actual 1912 Bauhaus performance of the Triadic ballet by Oskar Schlemmer as the basis of three re-designs with a strong base color and colorful elements. The rugs are individually handmade by De Caldes artisans in New Zealand wool and Viscose in their ateliers in Uttar Pradesh.
